Polluting the Information Space

Definition: Polluting the information space refers to the deliberate introduction of misleading, confusing, or manipulative information into a target audience’s environment to disrupt perception, decision-making, or trust in sources. It is a tactic used in Psychological Operations (PsyOps) to weaken adversaries’ confidence or influence behavior.

Context/Example: During a conflict, adversaries may spread multiple conflicting reports online about troop movements. Civilians and enemy forces cannot determine which reports are true, creating confusion, delaying decisions, and eroding trust.
