Port¶
Term: Port (network port)
Definition: A logical endpoint number on a machine that identifies a specific network service (e.g., port 80 for HTTP). Ports help direct incoming and outgoing network traffic to the correct application or service. Ports are identified by numbers ranging from 0 to 65535, with well-known ports (0-1023) reserved for common services. They can use either the TCP or UDP protocol.
Context/Example: A “secure machine” is described as having “all ports closed”; that means no services are listening, severely reducing the ways an attacker can connect.
